Fishing is a popular pier activity. A fishing license is not required in California if you are fishing on a public pier. Newport Pier has plenty of benches and spots to put your fishing poles up and catch fish. At the end of the pier there are fish cleaning stations and a sink to rinse off. The structure at the end of the pier was the Newport Pier Bar & Grill, but is now closed.

Strolling along the pier is also a popular activity. The pier extends over 1,000 feet into the ocean and provides some great ocean views and terrific beach views, too. There are Pay Binoculars Viewers along the pier and for 25 cents, you can buy some time on the viewer to see far away into the ocean for passing whales or other ocean animals.
