Sport Fishing from the pier without a fishing license is permitted by the California Dept of Fish and Game. The end of the pier in the deep water is where you can catch mackerel, sea bass, or yellowtail (species of fish that migrate in and out of the Santa Monica bay and deemed to be safe to eat). Plan on bringing your own bait as the existence of a bait shop at the end of the pier is 50-50 at best.
